Boka Restaurant Rumors: Sugargoat and ‘Sushi’ (Momotaro?) possibly joining GG’s Chicken Shop

After Boka announced GG’s Chicken Shop this past week, rumors are swirling on the other two concepts to be announced in early 2022

BOKA restaurant group will be taking over the former Southport Lanes building, and the first of three restaurants was announced this past week.

“Boka should debut all three over the summer, but the company is only ready to reveal details about one of its entries. GG’s Chicken Shop, a fast-casual pop-up that debuted during the pandemic as a ghost kitchen operating out of the Boka’s Michelin-starred namesake in Lincoln Park, will serve fried chicken sandwiches, salads, and more.”

SoulCycle Southport now reopening in 2022

Originally slated to open during the summer of 2021, SoulCycle Southport is now reopening in 2022

After almost two years of being closed, SoulCycle will now reopen their Southport Avenue location sometime in 2022 (they were originally slated to reopen in August, 2021).

We reached out to their Old Town location and part of the reason is they cannot find staffing, after laying off folks due to the Covid-19 pandemic, and plenty of job openings are listed online.

Are you ready to ride again?

The teens who hated Abercrombie are the adults shopping there now — and they can’t believe it either

Abercrombie & Fitch is opening at 3551 N. Southport Avenue in Chicago on December 17, 2021. It will be the city of Chicago’s only store as Water Tower Place has closed.

If you walk into an Abercrombie & Fitch, the first thing you’ll notice is this: It smells exactly the way you remember. It smells like a hot upperclassman leaning up against your locker, toying with his puka shell necklace, asking to “borrow” your algebra homework. It smells like popping the collar of not one but two polo shirts, worn one on top of the other. It smells like a ripped miniskirt that costs $98.

Boka Restaurant Group opening three restaurants in the former Southport Lanes building

GG’s Chicken Shop is the first of three arrivals inside the 118-year-old building in Chicago's Southport Corridor

One of Chicago’s most successful restaurant groups, Boka, plans on opening three restaurants in Lakeview’s Southport Corridor neighborhood, inside the 118-year-old former bowling alley space that belonged to Southport Lanes before it closed last year in Lakeview.

Boka should debut all three over the summer, but the company is only ready to reveal details about one of its entries. GG’s Chicken Shop, a fast-casual pop-up that debuted during the pandemic as a ghost kitchen operating out of the Boka’s Michelin-starred namesake in Lincoln Park, will serve fried chicken sandwiches, salads, and more. Executive Chef Lee Wolen is a kind of a chicken whisperer known for his roast chicken at Boka. He’ll serve a version of the item at GG’s along with a full slate of sides. Wolen says he imagines adding a rotisserie and cooking veggies like cauliflower on the spit.

New homes coming to West Lakeview

The parcel on West Wolfram is one of the last vacant sites in an area that has been made over from industrial to residential in recent decades.

The vacant parcel, most recently used by a plant nursery, was owned by an arm of Alto Manufacturing, a metal fabrication company on Ashland Avenue just east of the lots. In September, a legal entity headed by Giles and Mao Mei, a developer and builder based in Bridgeport, bought the lots for $4.72 million, according to the Cook County Recorder of Deeds.
