Southport Corridor & Wrigleyville — week of October 26, 2026

A quieter week for storefronts on Southport proper — but a notable one for the neighborhood’s breakfast scene, with a popular bagel deli opening its second Chicago shop in Lakeview today. Around Wrigley Field, the bollard project entered a new phase, the Cubs collected defensive hardware, and Halloween week peaks with Trick-or-Treat on Southport today and Haunted Halsted’s 30th on Saturday. Here’s the week.

New openings

Call Your Mother Deli opens today in Lakeview. The bagel shop opens its second Chicago location on Monday, October 26, at 2956 N. Sheffield Ave., after landing in Wicker Park earlier this year. Founded by Andrew Dana and Chef Daniela Moreira in 2018 from a Washington, D.C. farmers market stand, Call Your Mother bakes its bagels fresh daily in each shop — boiled in real malt, with a New York-style boiled exterior and a hint of honey borrowed from Montreal-style bagels, plus a smaller hole built to hold its big sandwiches. The lineup includes the Jetski, loaded with brisket, pastrami, sofrito, jalapeño, and cheddar and American cheese on a cheddar bagel, along with housemade treats like babka muffins and a seasonal Pumpkin Black & White cookie topped with Biscoff crumblies. The Lakeview shop leans into a summer-camp theme: local muralist Kevin Garbacz painted the deli’s signature telephone wires on the outside, and inside a wooden canoe and trophy fish left in the space set the tone alongside camp-inspired movie posters and pennants. Closings: No new store or business closings on or near Southport Avenue turned up this week. If you know of one we’ve missed, drop us a line.

Wrigleyville

Bollard construction around Wrigley Field reaches the pavers. The crash-rated bollard installation that began October 12 hit a visible new phase this weekend: the commemorative brick pavers lining Waveland and Sheffield around the ballpark have been removed to make room for construction. The Cubs told Bleed Cubbie Blue that some pavers will be returned to their original locations, while others will have to move because of the bollards — and anyone whose paver is moved will get an email about its new location. The street picture remains the same for now: Sheffield Avenue is closed to cars from Addison to Waveland through early December, with the west sidewalk closed to pedestrians, and Waveland Avenue is closed to westbound traffic from Clark to Sheffield through early March, with the south sidewalk closed. The phased work is scheduled to finish by Opening Day 2027, ahead of the 2027 All-Star Game, and Gallagher Way and surrounding businesses stay open throughout. (Bleed Cubbie Blue, October 24)

Cubs sweep Fielding Bible’s defensive honors. Pete Crow-Armstrong was named Fielding Bible’s Defensive Player of the Year, leading all of baseball in Fielding Run Value (26), Outs Above Average (26), and Runs Prevented (23), and Alex Bregman won best defensive third baseman with 10 of 17 first-place votes. The Cubs were also named Defensive Team of the Year. Crow-Armstrong, Ian Happ, Seiya Suzuki, Bregman, and Dansby Swanson are all Gold Glove finalists at their positions, with those winners still to be announced. (Roundtable, October 23)
