Statement from Ald. Tom Tunney on recent crime wave in Wrigleyville

From Ald. Tom Tunney’s email notification to the neighborhood on October 20, 2022:

Dear Neighbors,

Last weekend there was a concerning string of abductions where victims were lured or forced into a gray sedan near Wrigley Field, robbed, and then released safely in a different section of the neighborhood. Detectives continue to gather information about these robberies and the most recent community alert can be found by clicking here. If you have any information or video of these crimes please reach out to the Area 3 Bureau of Detectives at (312) 744-8263.

Earlier today I followed up with the command staff in the 19th District requesting an update on a reported fifth incident of the robberies where victims were forced into vehicles and phones and wallets were stolen. They confirmed that there was a fifth victim who reported the crime at another district station Wednesday evening. He told police he was approached and taken from the 1100 block of West Addison and robbed in the early morning hours of Sunday, October 16.

As I stated earlier this week, these recent crimes point out the need to have additional police coverage in our entertainment areas along Clark and Halsted. I called CPD leadership yesterday and reiterated the request I have made numerous times that they increase the number of police officers assigned to the 19th District. Short-term, I told them they need to deploy officers to our area for the Halloween weekend.

I would again ask residents to always be aware of their surroundings, to walk in pairs, and to call the police if they see suspicious behavior.
