Whole Foods Replaces Planned Amazon Fresh at Belmont & Halsted

Whole Foods Market is set to open a new location at the corner of West Belmont Avenue and North Halsted Street in Lakeview at 3179 N. Clark Street.

The grocer has signed a lease for a two-level space within a 60,000-square-foot retail building developed by Chicago-based Hubbard Street Group.

The building, completed in 2023, is now nearly fully leased. Other tenants include Fifth Third Bank and VCA Blum Animal Hospital, which will relocate from nearby North Clark Street.

An Amazon Fresh store had previously been planned for the site but never opened. Earlier this year, Amazon announced it would close its Amazon Fresh and Amazon Go stores, with some locations to be converted into Whole Foods Market stores.

There are currently 10 Whole Foods locations across Chicago.

The Belmont and Halsted lease comes as grocery expansion accelerates nationwide. New grocery stores are expected to total nearly 21 million square feet this year, according to CBRE.

No opening date or lease terms were disclosed. The property was marketed for lease by CBRE brokers Meredith Oliver and Stephen Ansani according to Crain’s.
