At least eight businesses along Chicago’s Southport Corridor were targeted in a series of overnight burglaries early Tuesday morning, September 1.
According to CBS Chicago, the incidents were concentrated along a roughly two block stretch of Southport Avenue between Byron Street and Waveland Avenue.
Businesses reported as being targeted include:
- Bombastic Café, 3732 N. Southport Ave.
- Blue Bayou, 3734 N. Southport Ave.
- Candyality, 3737 N. Southport Ave.
- Kai Sushi, 3819 N. Southport Ave.
- Tamed Salon, 3821 N. Southport Ave.
- Byron Cleaners, 3855 N. Southport Ave.
- Toons Bar & Grill, 3857 N. Southport Ave.
Surveillance video from Bombastic Café reportedly showed a burglar entering the business, taking a cash register and leaving in approximately 20 seconds.
Chicago police received reports of several incidents between approximately 1:00 a.m. and 2:30 a.m. Police said property was taken during at least one of the incidents, while other businesses sustained smashed windows or doors.
The affected businesses are located on the east side of Southport Avenue near several of the corridor’s most recognizable destinations, including the Music Box Theatre.
Three businesses at Elston Plaza near Elston and Addison were also targeted early Tuesday morning. As of Tuesday, police had not said whether the Avondale incidents were connected to the burglaries along Southport Avenue.
The incidents come as businesses along one of Lakeview’s busiest shopping and dining corridors head into the fall season.
