Featuring Greg Shuff, Owner of Corridor Brewery & Provisions

Lakeview is a community of small businesses. This holiday season, we’re sitting down with the people behind the neighborhood’s favorite local shops, restaurants, and institutions to learn their stories as part of a series we’re calling the Faces of Small Business. Know of a Lakeview business you think we should spotlight? Email us at info@lakeviewchamber.com.

When did your business open?

I’m fortunate enough to have two businesses in Lakeview; Corridor Brewery & Provisions just opened on October 15, 2015, and DryHop Brewers opened back in the day…June 13, 2013.

What inspired you to start a small business?

I’m a really bad employee but we’ve all got bills to pay.

Why did you choose to establish your business in Lakeview?

I moved to Chicago back in February of 2011 (the day after the ’11 blizzard) and I landed in Lakeview. So I’ve always been partial to this neighborhood…and I still live just down the street. Beside my emotional connection, I’ve always believed that Lakeview has great demographics but a very low density of craft beer spots. Those two factors made opening a brewery in Lakeview feel like the only smart thing to do.

What is your favorite thing about operating your business in Lakeview?

The neighbors. We’re only interested in being a neighborhood craft brewery, nothing more and nothing less. So when the neighbors are cool and excited about the weird stuff we do, it makes my job a lot of fun.

What has been your greatest success as a small business owner in Lakeview?

We just opened our second Lakeview brewpub and it’s going great. DryHop Brewers in East Lakeview is our first born. DryHop was well enough received that we felt (read: blindly believed) West Lakeview would be a great location to open a new and different kind of brewpub, Corridor Brewery & Provisions.

You can find Corridor Brewery & Provisions at 3446 N Southport Ave, or online at www.corridorchicago.com.

Summer 2015 on Chicago’s Southport Corridor

The rain has finally stopped long enough for us to get our annual photos of the Southport Corridor during summertime. Some of these view will look quite different next summer with the addition of SoulCycle and J. Crew coming, along with the proposed Southport TOD.

The Spanish Square to be at the Low Line Market July 23, Opening later this summer

Per Eater Chicago, The Spanish Square at 1358 W. Belmont will be at the Low Line Market on July 23, and opening later this summer.

“LAKEVIEW— Here’s more details about The Spanish Square, the tapas restaurant that’s been delayed near Belmont and Southport. The owners want to simulate the markets in Spain, where visitors can buy meats and cheeses while sipping on rioja or other wines. They’re gunning for a summer opening at 1358 W. Belmont Ave.”

Crosby’s Kitchen Expanding with an Adult-Themed Dinner Concept

Good news for all of you who have been asking for an adult wine-bar type of space on the Southport Corridor. Crosby’s Kitchen has recently purchased the Wrigleyville Dental space, and will begin a new-concept build out in the spring of 2016. We’ve been told it will be an over-21 space, most likely a Wine Bar/Dinner Bistro establishment. We’re also hearing the possibility / wishlist of a rooftop deck on the space, and the possibility of a tear-down to the old dental space with reconstruction.  So, kid-friendly up front, adult-friendly in the back.

Southport’s TOD could begin development late this year (update – looks like later in 2018 now)

We reached out to Alderman Tom Tunney on the status of the proposed TOD at 3401 N. Southport Avenue as far as when development would take place.  Per the Alderman, the developers still need to go through the planning commission and zoning committee, and then once approved, construction could start later in 2015 or early 2016 (update, we are hearing now 2017).  Galleria Liquors would be coming back as a tenant, but it is unlikely that Rise Sushi will be (they are looking for a new location around Southport however).

From May’s WLVN meeting, the group voted yes (27-18) in recommending the Southport TOD mixed-use building at 3401-09 N. Southport. See the floor plans below, and more detailed designs can be found at this link.
