Partial Funds Designated for Redevelopment Initiative at 3150 N. Racine Avenue

Partial funding has been designated for the affordable development project situated at 3150 N. Racine Avenue in Lakeview. Positioned at the junction of W. Belmont Avenue, this endeavor received city approval in 2022 and is spearheaded by Mercy Housing. Collaborating with LBBA Architects, the project aims to extend the existing Single Room Occupancy (SRO) facility.

The original edifice, erected in the 1920s by architect Dennis Langley, stands four stories tall and boasts cream brick walls complemented by a distinctive green tile roof. Presently housing 70 low-income, 200-square-foot SROs, this structure will undergo renovation. The refurbishment plans entail the transformation of the ground floor into modern amenity and support service spaces catering to residents’ needs.

Upon completion, the revamped building will accommodate 51 additional units, while an adjacent parking lot will make way for a further 35 units, resulting in a total of 86 studios and one-bedroom residences. The expansion will feature a new storefront space on its ground floor, anchoring the development.

Maintaining design continuity, the exterior of the expansion will mirror the original structure with cream brickwork and green accents. Zoning approval has been secured, alongside partial funding through Low Income Housing Tax Credits (LIHTC). However, specific funding details and a construction timeline are currently undisclosed.
