Chicago has officially been named one of the most expensive cities in the world. While city-specific rankings often evoke pride, this particular distinction leaves mixed feelings. Data company Numbeo has released its annual Cost of Living Index by City, placing Chicago among the priciest cities globally.
To compile the ranking, Numbeo analyzed data from January 2024 through mid-year, considering factors like cost of living, rent, groceries, restaurant prices, and local purchasing power. Dishearteningly, seven out of the ten cities listed are in the United States, meaning Chicagoans reside in both the most expensive country and one of the costliest cities worldwide according to Time Out.
Geneva, Switzerland, topped the list with estimated monthly costs of about $1,715 excluding rent. However, Geneva is also renowned for its high quality of life, so its top position on this list should be viewed in context. Here are the ten most expensive cities in the world:
- Geneva, Switzerland
- Zurich, Switzerland
- New York, New York, United States
- San Francisco, California, United States
- Boston, Massachusetts, United States
- Reykjavik, Iceland
- Washington D.C., United States
- Seattle, Washington, United States
- Los Angeles, California, United States
- Chicago, Illinois, United States
