Colectivo Coffee Roasters, a Milwaukee-based coffee company, announced plans last year to open a new café at 3258 N. Southport Avenue in Chicago’s Southport Corridor neighborhood. This location, formerly home to the Schoolyard Tavern, is currently under construction. The new café is expected to open in 2025.
The Southport café will occupy approximately 2,100 square feet, offering indoor seating for 40 patrons and outdoor seating for 30. Colectivo is known for its distinct café spaces, bright patios, signature espresso drinks, and made-from-scratch food. Each café offers a full menu, including all-day breakfast, freshly prepared sandwiches, and homemade bakery items from their own bakery.

In addition to the Southport location, Colectivo has already opened another café in Chicago’s Ravenswood neighborhood at 1825 W. Lawrence Avenue. This expansion will bring Colectivo’s presence in the Chicago area to seven locations, adding to their existing cafés in Wicker Park, Lincoln Park, Logan Square, Evanston, and Andersonville.
Colectivo was founded in Milwaukee in 1993 and opened its first Chicago location in 2017. The company has built a reputation for integrating its cafés into the fabric of the neighborhoods they serve, providing welcoming spaces for the community to gather.

Residents were saddened by the closure of Schoolyard Tavern during the COVID-19 pandemic, but they are glad to see new life coming to this legacy space with the arrival of Colectivo Coffee, which will bring its unique blend of coffee, food, and community atmosphere to the Southport neighborhood.
