Triple shootings in Lakeview Memorial Day Weekend

The Lakeview East neighborhood in Chicago is currently being investigated by the police following a triple shooting, marking the third shooting incident in the area within a span of four days.

According to the Chicago police, the incident occurred around 1 a.m. on Sunday, when three men were walking on the sidewalk in the 600 block of West Barry Avenue. Gunshots were fired, but the source of the gunfire remains unknown. Unfortunately, all three men were struck by the bullets.

One of the victims sustained gunshot wounds to the back and chest and was promptly transported to Illinois Masonic Hospital in serious condition, as confirmed by the police. Another man, aged 22, was shot in the leg and is currently in good condition. Similarly, the third man, aged 32, was hit in the back but is in good condition.

This recent shooting adds to a string of incidents that have taken place in the area. Early Saturday morning, just a few blocks away in the 500 block of West Surf Street, another man was shot and tragically succumbed to his injuries. The deceased victim has been identified as William Hair, a 35-year-old individual, according to the Medical Examiner.

Additionally, on Thursday, another person was shot in the vicinity, specifically in the 500 block of West Melrose Street. The police reported that the victim was sitting in a vehicle when an unidentified person approached and began shooting, resulting in critical injuries.

In light of these events, the Chicago Police Department has canceled a scheduled day off for all officers over the holiday weekend to ensure increased police presence in neighborhoods and at large gatherings.

The investigations into these shootings are ongoing, with the police working diligently to gather information and bring the responsible parties to justice.

And from Ald. Bennett Lawson’s Office:

“Dear Neighbors,

As many of you may know, there were three shootings in the 44th Ward over the last week, two of which occurred over Memorial Day weekend. As a resident and your alderman, I was horrified by this news. Nothing is more important to me than the safety and well-being of our residents in the 44th Ward. Everyone should be able to walk freely any time of day or night in our community, or anywhere in the city, and anything less than that is unacceptable.

  • Thursday, May 25th at 1:45 AM, a 35-year-old male was shot on the 500 block of W Melrose.
  • Saturday, May 27th at 2:15 AM, a 35-year-old male was shot and killed on the 500 block of W Surf St.
  • Sunday, May 28th at 12:50 AM, three people were shot on the 600 block of W Barry Ave.

My office has been in constant communication with CPD to stay up to speed on progress being made on all three of these cases. My heart goes out to those impacted by the three shooting incidents in recent days, especially to the friends and family of the man who tragically lost his life on Saturday.

At this time, Area 3 detectives have been able to pull footage from cameras in the surrounding areas of all three incidents, but all investigations are still ongoing. I encourage anyone with additional information about any of these recent incidents to call CPD at 312-744-8263 and share what you know so those responsible can be held accountable.

I will continue to stay in close contact with CPD to monitor progress in all of these cases and to work with them in providing additional support where needed to keep our community safe.
