SOUTHPORT FUNDAMENTALS, A FAMILY-FOCUSED

COMMUNITY CENTER, OPENS ITS DOORS TUESDAY, AUGUST 29

New Community Center in the Southport Corridor Neighborhood Dedicated

to Making Learning Fun for Kids of All Ages (Including Grown-Ups!)

(CHICAGO, IL) – Southport FUNdamentals, a new community center dedicated to making learning fun, will celebrate its grand opening with a ribbon cutting on Tuesday, August 29, 2023. The new community center is located at 3827 North Southport Avenue, on the north end of Chicago’s Southport Corridor neighborhood.

Together with the Lakeview Roscoe Village Chamber of Commerce, Southport FUNdamentals will host a ribbon-cutting ceremony with interactive educational activities and art projects, as well as snacks and beverages between 5 and 7 pm CT. The event is free and open to the public.

“I strongly believe in the power of making learning fun,” says Risa McMahon, CEO and founder of Southport FUNdamentals. “I want Southport FUNdamentals to be an inviting space where kids and parents can learn and explore in a fun and supportive environment. You’re never too old to learn something new, which is why we’ll have programming for grown-ups as well as kids.”

Southport FUNdamentals will offer a series of activities and classes including Music & Dance; Cooking & Baking; Tinkering; Sewing, Knitting & Crochet; and more. Additionally, the center will host a rotating cast of FUN-structors, or experienced instructors who can teach about topics related to a variety of topics including Chicago history, leadership, business, education, art and fitness. New classes and events will be added frequently.

Registration for activities and classes will open Tuesday, September 5, with the first series of classes beginning the same day.

“As a mom, I know how hectic life can get, which is why I wanted Southport FUNdamentals to be an inviting place for both kids and kids at heart of any age.” said McMahon. “We plan to offer programming for a wide range of ages — kids can enjoy learning new skills like cooking or dance, and adults can take a fitness class or enjoy a lecture that will fill their professional development bucket. Of course, we’ll have parent-kid programs as well!”

Southport FUNdamentals also plans to offer weekend programming, including “Errands and Edu-tainment”, a service that allows parents and caregivers to drop off their 6-12 year olds while they run errands in the neighborhood. For parents of smaller children ages 0-6, families can use the community center as a play space and way to connect with others in the community.
