Sound of Music Sing-a-Long returns to Music Box Theatre Thanksgiving Weekend

The tunes of “The Sound of Music” will fill the Music Box Theatre, setting the stage for a joyous experience starting Thanksgiving weekend.

Embracing their yearly tradition, the theater welcomes Chicagoans to partake in eight sing-alongs to the beloved film at 3733 N. Southport Ave. from November 24 to December 3. Subtitles will accompany the screening, facilitating audience participation.

Before each event, the host, Joe Savino, and the house organist, Dennis Scott, will guide attendees through a vocal warm-up. Additionally, audience members will receive a prop bag containing items like flash cards and a piece of an edelweiss flower to enhance their interactive experience during the movie.

Pioneering the “Sound of Music” sing-along in May 2001, the Music Box Theatre has transformed it into a Thanksgiving weekend tradition due to its overwhelming success. Responding to the growing demand, the theater has expanded the screenings over the years. Buck LePard, the marketing manager, attributes the enduring popularity of “The Sound of Music” to its timeless songs and enduring themes of romance and family.

The theater’s patrons, some of whom have been attending for over a decade, eagerly express their enthusiasm. Elaborate and festive costumes are a common sight, with attendees competing in the annual costume contest. Nuns, von Trapp family members, and even creative representations of hillsides with goat herds and children dangling off them have graced past events. Notably, a brown paper package tied up with strings is a popular choice for young children.

LePard and the rest of the theater staff find joy in the sing-alongs becoming a cherished tradition for both Chicagoans and visitors alike. He describes the atmosphere as “fun and festive,” making it an ideal activity during the holiday season. For those with family and friends in town, it offers a delightful group outing that adds a touch of magic to the festive celebrations.
