The establishment will be situated in the former West Town Bakery space inside the Hotel Zachary, with plans to debut by Opening Day in 2024. In collaboration with the Cubs and Marquee Development, Steingold is overseeing a remodeling project with FC Studio and Wink Design.
The Cubs’ season opener on Thursday, March 28, against the World Series champion Texas Rangers is the target launch date for the deli. Steingold, a self-proclaimed baseball historian, mentions a six-month effort leading to this partnership. Notably, some of the Cubs’ top executives are already patrons at Steingold’s main location on Southport.
The deli’s menu at the new location will feature classic offerings like sandwiches, bagels, pastrami, turkey, and chicken shawarma. Additionally, patrons can enjoy innovative items such as everything-bagel dogs on a stick, latke-tot poutine, and corned beef grilled cheese. Culinary director Cara Peterson, formerly with the James Beard Award-winning restaurant Shaya, will introduce a special soft-serve ice cream with flavors like baklava with honey-salted caramel.
Despite limitations on menu offerings due to the absence of an exhaust hood on the first floor, the new Steingold’s location will serve coffee from Connect Roasters, a company endorsed by Cubs player Ian Happ. The drink menu will include nostalgic cocktails like frozen bourbon & mint egg creams.
Having adopted a modern and multicultural approach to Jewish delis since its establishment in 2017 in North Center (relocating to Lakeview in 2021), Steingold’s reflects the diversity within the owner’s family. Plans for expansion include selling items in grocery stores, with current availability at Stan’s Donuts locations. While operating in a shared kitchen in Humboldt Park, there are considerations for potentially opening a stall inside Wrigley Field in the future.
The new Steingold’s inside the Hotel Zachary, located at 3630 N. Clark Street, is scheduled for a late-March or early-April opening. Stay tuned for updates in the coming months.
