Colectivo Coffee’s anticipated new location at 3258 N. Southport Avenue, the former site of Schoolyard Tavern, has encountered a significant setback. The City of Chicago has issued a stop work order on the site, citing construction activities being carried out without the necessary permits.

The stop work order, a serious measure taken by the city, is designed to halt any construction that does not comply with local regulations. According to the City of Chicago, “Stop work orders are issued to stop any construction that is done without a required permit, contrary to an approved permit, or by unlicensed persons.” This action ensures that all building and renovation activities meet the city’s safety and regulatory standards, protecting both workers and the public.

The stop work order was issued on July 30, 2024 and raises questions about the project’s timeline and future, as Colectivo Coffee will now need to address the city’s concerns and obtain the necessary permits before resuming construction. This delay may affect the café’s opening date which was originally scheduled for the end of 2024.
