Music Box Theatre Expands Into Former Click Shoes Space, Adding Third Screen

The Music Box Theatre, a cherished cinematic gem in Chicago’s Lakeview neighborhood, is embarking on an exciting expansion. A new 115-seat auditorium, dubbed Theater 3, is set to enhance the theater’s offerings, providing more space for independent films, local events, and longer runs.

A Vision Realized

The idea of expanding the Music Box Theatre first surfaced in 2022 but was initially shelved due to financial constraints. However, a strong programming year in 2023 and growing demand from distributors and filmmakers reignited the plan. The project gained momentum after the theater secured a $1.2 million Community Development Grant from the city, contributing to the $2.5 million expansion budget.

“We’re constantly asked to host Chicago filmmakers and community events, and too often, we have to say no,” said General Manager Ryan Oestreich. “This gives us the space to say yes more often. It supports emerging and established artists and keeps us growing with the film community here.”

Honoring the Past, Embracing the Future

The new Theater 3 will be located at 3729 N. Southport Avenue, adjacent to the main theater at 3733 N. Southport Avenue. This space was formerly occupied by Click Shoes & More, a beloved boutique that served the community for nearly two decades before closing its doors in December 2024. Owner Paula Eisen reflected on the store’s closure, stating, “When I opened Click, I could have never known that a community would be built from it. It’s been very bittersweet to say goodbye, but I know that this is the right time for me to move on.” (Block Club Chicago)

Enhancing the Historic Venue

The expansion includes not only the new screen but also additional bathrooms and reconfigurations within the existing space. Theater 2, added in 1991, will be slightly shortened to create a hallway connecting the lobby to the new Theater 3. Theater 2 will transition to digital-only projection, while the new auditorium will feature a projection booth.

The new theater will seat 115 people, larger than the 70-seat second theater but smaller than the 700-seat main auditorium. This addition aims to provide more programming flexibility and support the theater’s long-term sustainability.

Community Support and Future Plans

The Music Box Theatre was among 28 businesses awarded Community Development Grant funding this spring, part of the city’s effort to support small businesses and revitalize commercial corridors. Other recipients include the South Side Birth Center, Soul Veg Kitchen, and Maplewood Brewing.

Mayor Brandon Johnson emphasized the importance of such initiatives, stating, “Every neighborhood deserves to share in the beauty and economic opportunity this city has to offer.”

The Music Box is currently finalizing its team of architects and contractors, with construction expected to begin soon. This expansion marks a significant milestone in the theater’s ongoing commitment to serving as a home for the Chicago film community.
