Fifth Third Bank on Southport Officially Closed, Redevelopment Planned for Site

The Fifth Third Bank branch located at 3604 N. Southport Avenue has officially closed as of July 10, 2025. The closure ends years of banking operations at the site, which sits adjacent to the Southport CTA Brown Line station.

According to sources familiar with the property, the building is slated for demolition. In its place, a transit-oriented development is expected, which will include ground-floor retail space. No formal construction timeline has been announced, but the location’s proximity to public transportation and Southport’s strong commercial demand make it a prime site for redevelopment.

This marks another shift in the Southport Corridor, where available storefronts remain limited and highly competitive. The closing follows a broader trend across Chicago in which older single-use buildings are being replaced by mixed-use developments—particularly in neighborhoods with high walkability and access to transit.

Fifth Third customers have been directed to the bank’s nearby Wrigleyville branch at 3601 N. Broadway for continued service.

Further updates will be provided as redevelopment plans progress.
