A new apartment building is set to replace the former Stage 773 theater in Lakeview.
The Chicago City Council has approved plans for a five-story development at 1225 W. Belmont Ave., the site of the theater that closed in 2022. The project, led by JAB Real Estate, will include 40 apartments and ground-floor retail space.
Stage 773, long known for hosting comedy and live theater, shut down after more than a decade in operation. The building has remained vacant since.
The new development will bring additional housing to the neighborhood while keeping commercial activity along Belmont Avenue. Construction is expected to begin once permitting is finalized.

That’s the second performance space in Lakeview this year to be converted into apartments, the first one being Briar Street Theater for Blue Man Group.
