Visiting Lakeview’s Lincoln Hub

The “Lincoln Hub” is located in Chicago\’s Lakeview neighborhood at the intersection of Wellington, Lincoln and Southport Avenue. It is almost complete, and we took a visit there on Memorial Day.

Let’s hear your thoughts in the comments.

  1. Thanks for posting the pictures. I haven't seen the intersection since the project started since I now avoid it like the plague. The sheer visual ridiculousness of the outcome confirms that I should continue to avoid it, whether via car, bike or foot.

  2. They describe it as an oriental carpet — they clearly being someone who's never actually seen an oriental carpet. I don't get it.

  3. I live nearby and those of us that live on the 1200 & 1300 blocks of Nelson are up in arms! What once was a quiet desirable two block stretch where we have enjoyed low traffic patterns has now become a cut through for drivers frustrated by the bottleneck that this project has created on Southport heading south. We have voiced our frustrations with both the alderman and the Lakeview Chamber who created this absurdity!!This slowing of traffic was described as \”a calming\” of traffic at the intersection by the ones responsible for creating this and let me tell you there is nothing \”calming\” about drivers racing down our once quiet two blocks. We are mad as hell!!

  4. I overheard that it cost $37,000 per corner to create this. Six corners, you do the math. Why are we paying for people to be able to sit on the street corners of busy streets, just plain stupid?? This is an accident and lawsuit waiting to happen here.

  5. How did something like this pass/get agreed upon? It looks ridiculous and the business owners hate it and it sounds like the neighbors dislike it as well. What does the alderman say?

  6. Right out of a CARTOON COMIC STRIP. I would not consider purchasing a home anywhere near this intersection. I beleive Saint Alphonsus will also see a decline in future couples choosing to have there wedding ceremonies with them. What was once a classic beautiful European veranda for photos and gatherings has been marred by huge polkadots. The whole concept is jarring and unattractive.

  8. St. Alphonsus is such a beautiful church and it is embarrassing that the city would put this in front of it. Why the city would think that anyone wants to hang out in an intersection is beyond me.
