Galleria Liqueurs smashed and grabbed – again

Chicago authorities are currently investigating a series of burglaries that occurred on the North Side early Thursday morning.

According to reports, multiple break-ins transpired, causing significant distress to local businesses. Benjamin Pourkhalili, owner of Galleria Liqueurs in Old Town, expressed frustration as his storefront was shattered and boarded up following the incident. The burglars, identified as two male suspects, smashed the window of the liquor store around 4:50 a.m., stole merchandise, and fled in a maroon SUV, potentially a Dodge.

This isn’t the first time Pourkhalili has been targeted; his second location on North Southport Avenue in Lakeview was also raided just after 3:20 a.m. In total, Pourkhalili estimated losses of nearly $60,000, including $33,000 for window repairs. Despite reporting the incidents, he voiced his disappointment in the lack of adequate protection and support from city officials and law enforcement.

Surveillance footage from nearby stores, such as Sephora adjacent to Galleria Liquors, captured the thieves in action, stealing alcohol bottles. The repeated burglaries have taken a severe toll on Pourkhalili’s businesses, with insurance complications exacerbating the financial strain.

In addition to Galleria Liqueurs, Liquor Expo on Halsted Street in Lincoln Park fell victim to a similar break-in around 1:35 a.m., further highlighting the extent of the criminal activity in the area. Second Ward Alderman Brian Hopkins revealed that two groups, using stolen Dodge Durangos, targeted a total of five stores. Despite law enforcement’s efforts to pursue the suspects, the high-speed chase had to be terminated for safety reasons.

Hopkins emphasized the organized nature of these robbery crews, speculating their motive to resell high-value items like tequila and champagne on the black market. He called for a collaborative effort to combat such criminal enterprises, urging the identification and shutdown of retailers involved in the illegal trade.

As investigations continue, no suspects have been apprehended, prompting Hopkins to urge voters to elect leaders committed to addressing criminal activities and supporting law enforcement initiatives.

  1. Galleria Liquors needs our support, NOW! First and obviously, buy from them! Hey, stock up for the Super Bowl. Second: Contact the 44th ward alderman, Bennett Lawson, to demand action about this lawlessness. If you’re a registered voter let him know that, and that YOU VOTE!
