Construction has started on Southport’s former Schoolyard Tavern

Construction has begun on the former Schoolyard Tavern space, soon to be transformed into a new Colectivo Coffee location at 3258 N. Southport Avenue. This Milwaukee-based coffeehouse chain is celebrated for its unique café environments, welcoming outdoor spaces, and an enticing menu of signature coffee creations and scratch-made food.

According to a recent news release, Colectivo Coffee’s new Southport café will embody the brand’s distinctive charm and community-focused ethos. Spanning approximately 2,100 square feet, the café will offer indoor seating for up to 40 guests and outdoor seating for 30, seamlessly blending into the neighborhood’s atmosphere.

Visitors can look forward to an extensive menu featuring Colectivo’s renowned espresso drinks, freshly brewed coffee, and cold brew on tap. In addition to these beloved beverages, the café will serve an array of all-day breakfast items, freshly made sandwiches, and delectable bakery treats from Colectivo’s in-house bakery.

Scheduled to open in late 2024, this new location marks another step in Colectivo Coffee’s steady expansion. The company, which began in Milwaukee in 1993, entered the Chicago market in 2017 and has since established five cafés in the city’s most dynamic neighborhoods: Wicker Park, Lincoln Park, Logan Square, Evanston, and Andersonville. Beyond Chicago, Colectivo operates 15 additional locations in Milwaukee and Madison.

With its commitment to creating inviting spaces and serving high-quality coffee and food, Colectivo Coffee is set to become a cherished part of the Southport Corridor community. Keep an eye out for more updates as the opening date approaches, and get ready to enjoy a new favorite spot for your coffee fix!

  1. Thank goodness! Ever since Julius Meinl left there’s only Capital One Cafe for business meetings or grabbing coffee/lunch with friends.
