The Chicago Cubs are marking a major milestone this month, celebrating 150 years as a National League franchise with a weekend of events at Wrigley Field on Saturday, August 29 and Sunday, August 30.
The celebration will look back at the players, moments and traditions that have shaped the Cubs since 1876, while also recognizing the team’s long connection to Wrigleyville and the neighborhood surrounding the ballpark.
New Founders’ Clock Coming to Clark and Addison
The weekend begins Saturday with the dedication of a new Founders’ Clock at the corner of Clark and Addison.
The permanent four-sided clock takes its name from the Cubs’ role as a founding member of the National League and is designed to become a new landmark outside Wrigley Field.
Finished in Wrigley Field’s familiar deep green, the clock will feature historic Cubs logos and inscriptions representing four different eras of the franchise.
Cubs 150th Anniversary Team to Be Honored
Saturday’s game will also feature a special pregame recognition of the Cubs 150th Anniversary Team, a collection of 40 players and three managers selected by fans to represent some of the most accomplished and influential figures in franchise history.
The full roster will be announced August 24, with more than 20 members expected to participate in the August 29 ceremony.
The names of everyone selected to the anniversary team will also be permanently displayed on a plaque in the Cubs Hall of Fame inside the Left Field Budweiser Bleacher concourse.
Fans Can Sign a Replica 1876 Championship Banner
Fans will get a chance to become part of the anniversary celebration at Gallagher Way by signing a replica of the Cubs’ 1876 championship banner.
That team won the National League championship during the league’s inaugural season.
The banner will initially be available to fans even without a game ticket. Once Gallagher Way officially opens for the game, admission will require a ticket.
After the celebration, the fan-signed banner will remain on display at Wrigley Field.
And in perhaps the most appropriately priced promotion for a 150th anniversary celebration, Budweiser will be available for $1.50 at Gallagher Way from the time the gates open through the second inning.
Cubs History on Display
The Cubs’ 150th anniversary exhibition will also continue throughout the weekend in the motorola razr room.
Among the pieces of Cubs history on display will be:
- Dexter Fowler’s jersey from Game 7 of the 2016 World Series
- The official lineup card from Game 7 of the 2016 World Series
- Ryne Sandberg’s 1984 National League MVP Award
- Championship trophies from the Cubs’ 1907 and 1908 seasons
Sports artist Dave Hobrecht will also be at Wrigley Field during the weekend creating commemorative works featuring Cubs greats Jon Lester and Jody Davis.
Jon Lester, Jody Davis and Vince Lloyd Enter Cubs Hall of Fame
The anniversary weekend concludes Sunday with the induction of Jon Lester, Jody Davis and longtime Cubs broadcaster Vince Lloyd into the Cubs Hall of Fame.
Lloyd will receive the Hall of Fame’s new Lifetime Achievement Award, honoring individuals whose contributions to the organization extended across their lifetime.
The Class of 2026 will be recognized on the field before the August 30 game and receive their Hall of Fame jackets alongside other Cubs legends.
The first 10,000 early-arriving fans Sunday will also receive Cubs Hall of Fame pins featuring Lester and Davis.
For a franchise whose history is so closely tied to both its ballpark and the surrounding neighborhood, the weekend will be more than a celebration of 150 years of Cubs baseball. It will also be a celebration of the generations of fans who have made Wrigley Field — and Wrigleyville — one of baseball’s most recognizable destinations.
