“I’m not confident that it is worthy of our lakefront,” said Planning Commissioner Maurice Cox
3636 N. Lake Shore Drive
A plan to redevelop a rare vacant lakefront lot is moving forward despite a lack of enthusiasm from the city’s top planning official over the project’s architecture. Planning Commissioner Maurice Cox voted in favor of the proposal for 3636 N. Lake Shore Drive at July’s Plan Commission meeting but criticized the design and questioned whether it belonged on Chicago’s lakefront.
Pam and Steve Lipshutz had several offers for the building, but they didn’t take the highest bidder. Instead, they chose a developer who will keep the neighbors in mind as they develop what is likely to be apartments.
Everything is for sale at Tenenbaum True Value Hardware, a family-owned business in Lakeview that is closing after 98 years.

“Every day I come to work, it gets harder and harder to keep it together because this is my other home, this is my family, my customers are my family, my employees,” said Pam Lipshutz, owner
Those loyal employees include Christine Potthast, bookkeeper since 1959.
“I started after I graduated from high school,” she said. “My dad was a janitor here and he said, ‘Maury, give my daughter a job!’ and I’ve been here ever since.”
The proposed development from Ald. Tom Tunney’s website
CHICAGO — A proposal for two Lakeview apartment buildings — one 19 stories tall and the other six stories — connected at the base cleared a key city panel Thursday.
A new development is currently being marketed at the corner of Belmont and Halsted called Lakeview Connection. This is currently the site of Fifth Third Bank’s drive through, and will include a smaller version of the branch, with several more retail spaces available. A grocery store tenant has taken the second floor, and the rumor is that it will be Amazon Fresh. More information can be found here at this link from CBRE.
As we reported last year, proposed plans came out on a new TOD development replacing an abandoned building at 3347-49 N. Southport. As of March, 2020, the development had been approved according to Ald. Tom Tunney\’s website, and this week, construction fencing went up with demolition imminent. What do you think of this upcoming development?
Looks like it could be the end to this classic building on Southport Avenue. According to this listing, 3714 N. Southport is next in line for redevelopment where Stella Blue is currently located.
Earlier this summer, proposed plans came out on a new TOD development replacing an abandoned building at 3347-49 N. Southport. The original proposal was not received too well by the community, and the developer came back with a new plan, going from 6 floors down to 5 back in November, 2019. That still was met with mixed reaction due to too many units, and the developer has come back reducing the amount of apartments to 27. All other building characteristics remain the same at this time.
