3347-49 Transit Oriented Development Approved

Last year, proposed plans came out on a new TOD development replacing an abandoned building at 3347-49 N. Southport. The original proposal was not received too well by the community, and the developer came back with a new plan, going from 6 floors down to 5 back in November, 2019. That still was met with mixed reaction due to too many units. In December, 2019, the developer came back reducing the amount of apartments to 27.  All other building characteristics remained the same.  As of March, 2020, the development has been approved according to Ald. Tom Tunney’s website.

Details on the updated development:

The Red Balloon Company is closing on Southport

The Red Balloon Children’s boutique, located at 3651 N. Southport Avenue came out swinging in 2014, vowing to fight the national retail chains on the Southport Corridor.

“Someone’s gotta do their part to fight the national big box encroachment,” the owner said to then DNA Chicago.

Unfortunately, The Red Balloon announced their closure on January 1 and will now remain at their Bucktown location. Did you shop at The Red Balloon? What can save small independent shops on Southport?
